Dead Vlie

Surrounded by the highest dunes in the world, Dead Vlei in the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia was once the site of regular flood events by the Tsauchab River which formed a clay pan and offered Kameeldoring trees a plentiful environment in which to thrive. However, 600 to 700 years ago the changing climate and geographical environment tipped past a sustainable point and left the area too dry to sustain the trees. Today Dead Vlie is the surreal site of dozens of long-dead trees reaching out of a perfectly flat clay pan, like the hands of the undead from graves. The pan and its neighbouring Sousoesvlei Pan are surrounded by a truly astounding landscape of absolutely giant rust-coloured dunes which stretch into the distance well beyond the horizon, even when viewed from an aircraft, high above. The landscape is a most haunting and beautiful one. This tree, in particular, drew me and I carefully placed the rising sun, such that the tree appears almost to be reaching out towards it. Its wood, blackened by the scorching sun, is however the twist in the tale, and evidence to the fact that its struggle in this harsh environment was lost long ago.

Please note that due to the excess costs and risks which come with shipping framed artwork, unless specified, all works are supplied as print-only items, meaning that they are unframed. The prints are of archival quality and it is recommended that in each case, you consult with an expert framer to discuss your mounting and framing choices so as to best preserve and display your newly acquired artwork. It is also recommended that best-practise, archival quality materials and display methods are used in order to ensure the most promising preservation results.

IMPORTANT:

Certain fine-art print types are able to be combined with high-end mounting, framing, and/or display methods, such as Dibond and Diasec, while others are not. It is important to consult a framing expert before committing your print to the Dibond or Diasec process. Using non-recommended types of papers or inks with the Dibond / Diasec process may irreversibly yield poor results or destroy the print.

Archival Quality

I have chosen the finest modern Giclée print processes provided by our pro photographic lab. The papers, inks, printers, workflows, including the experts who produce my prints, are all of the highest certified standards available. At every turn, consideration has been given to the quality of producing each print and these standards are measurable and reproducible. I oversee the quality of the prints myself.

Both the paper and the inks are of archival quality, meaning that when combined with other archival quality standards of framing and display which protect the print from UV, dust, and other forms of contamination or chemical tarnishing, a print is protected such that it is able to last well beyond a lifetime.

Hahnemühle Photo Rag

Hahnemühle Photo Rag is a premium art paper and is made from 100% cotton. It offers an ultra-smooth surface texture. Hahnemühle offers archival standards regarding density, colour range, colour graduation and image sharpness while preserving the touch and feel of genuine art paper. The paper weighs a hefty and hard-wearing 308 g/m². It has a smooth texture and a mildly warm off-white tone, and a matt finish which conveys its authentic and premium quality.

Despite being very slightly warm in tone, the medium conveys striking whites with deep, rich blacks and a striking array of both colour and greyscale tones and is thereby able to fully and accurately convey the interpretation of the artwork according to my processing of the image.

Authenticity

Each print is a limited edition art piece by Paul Sutton and is signed by the artist. You will receive a certificate of authenticity with your print that proves its originality and value.
